Effects of Depression on Everyday Life

Depression is a mood disorder that influences one’s thoughts, behavors, and feelings. Depression affects people differently depending on what causes it. Sometimes, people experiencing depression may become less productive, isolate themselves or develop adverse health problems. Some indicators that can reveal that you are suffering from depression include the urge to abuse drugs, distracted sleeping patterns, unexpected child behavior, and reduced performance and responsibility.

Depression and One’s Performance and Responsibility

Depression influences the level of performance satisfaction at your workplace. Since depression causes low concentration level, you are likely to be less keen on details and less responsive, and your responsibility level could decrease. Depression makes one lose interest in the things they used to value and feel less obliged to be accountable. If you have noticed that you get easily irritated over issues that have no or less meaning in your life or experience excess anxiety, you could be suffering from depression.

Married men suffering from depression are more susceptible to abandoning their role in the family, such as failing to provide basic needs for the family and showing love and care to their spouses and children. On the other hand, women may be less concerned about their physical appearance, fail to accomplish their motherly responsibilities, and their motivation drive can reduce drastically. Parents can neglect their children due to reduced feelings of responsibility leading to a broken or non-functional family.

Depression and Children Behavior

Signs and symptoms of depression can differ in some ways between children and adults. In addition, the consequences and impact on one’s life can differ. Depressed children can feel sad, drop out of school, lose weight, and isolate themselves from other children. In some instances, children may feel insecure and become clingy to their caregivers. Depression can also lead to fixation and delayed developmental milestones.

  Depression and Sleep Disruption

Changed sleep patterns can be a sign of depression. Even though most people have insomnia, some people’s need to sleep for extended periods increases. Excessive sleep can result from reduced energy, reduced ability to concentrate, and feeling extremely tired. One’s ability to control these feeling deteriorate with time as the symptoms take longer to be identified and treated. Some symptoms that indicate that one is suffering from this effect of depression include staying awake during the night, disrupted sleep intervals, and having unpredictable sleep patterns.

Depression and Drug Abuse

Many people with depression abuse drugs because they believe that the effects of the drugs can help them get relief from the issue that causes their psychological problems. Middle-aged people and teenagers are more likely to abuse drugs if they are suffering from depression compared to any other social group. Apart from abusing drugs, such individuals are at a higher risk of having suicidal thoughts and executing them. Individuals who abuse drugs due to their mental problems are also likely to experience self-pity, struggle to keep a relationship with others or experience tremors.

The Need to Call for Help

Depression is a treatable clinical problem. The psychiatrist seeks information about your mental health history and analyses your symptoms to identify the type of depression you suffer from and determine the best intervention approach. Some treatment intervention approaches include medication, psychotherapy, and brain stimulation therapy.

One may not prevent depression but can reduce the risk by engaging in self-care activities often, adopting a healthy sleep routine, and developing stress-coping techniques to promote a healthy life.
